Keeping our streets clean

Since 2011, Total has been working with municipal councils all around Fiji to help keep our streets clean. As of today Total has installed 278 galvanized litter bins complete with insert bins in all 19 towns and cities around the country.

The litter bins have helped create and sustain cleaner environments helping with the never-ending problem we face with rubbish and littering. This year, Total is working with our partners in the local councils to ensure the bins are maintained in line with the image they are promoting in their individual town and cities.

Total has also worked with other sectors of the community installing litter bins at the Labasa Hospital and the Fiji Police Force compounds in Nasova and Nasinu and are continuously working to assist where we can.

In the Kingdom of Tonga, Total has also distributed 20 litter bins to six schools around Tongatapu helping them to keep their schools clean and healthy.

Promoting safety on our roads

Accidents and unnecessary deaths continue to plague our country with speeding being the major cause. Each year, over 40 people lose their lives on Fiji’s road and in 2012 the Land Transport Authority recorded over 70,000 traffic infringement notices involving teenagers alone.

The higher number of deaths and violations of road rules prompted the LTA in 2011 to launch their Road Marshals Club. Since then, Total has joined LTA in their mission to promote road safety around Fiji. Total provides an annual sponsorship to the Club to assist with their safety awareness campaign.

The Road Marshal Club is the LTA’s community watchdog network promoting and educating the public on road safety. Currently, the Club has 1,037 Marshals who work in their respective communities monitoring speed limits, checking vehicle safety and drivers license validity, educating pedestrians on safety at crossings, and creating awareness on the issues of drink driving, speeding and driving after consuming kava.

The reach of the Club is far and wide and has extended from the streets of our main cities to the interior of Viti Levu and the outlying island of Kadavu, Taveuni and parts of Lomaiviti. The LTA Road Marshals are indeed champions of road safety fighting a worthy cause. In support of the Decade of Action for Road Safety resolution proclaimed by UN General Assembly in March 2010, Total is proud to be a partner in this crucial initiative.
